Asked of the LORD by Hannah and lent to Him; he ministered before the LORD at Shiloh as a child girded with a linen ephod; the LORD called him by night and he answered, 'Speak; for thy servant heareth'; all Israel knew he was established to be a prophet of the LORD; he set up a stone and called it Ebenezer, 'Hitherto hath the LORD helped us'; he judged Israel all his days, warned the people when they asked for a king, anointed Saul and then David, and died, and all Israel lamented him.

Counted from Scripture: Old and grayheaded when Israel asked for a king (1 Sam 12:2), before Saul's forty years (Acts 13:21) that ended c. 1010 BC; he died while David was fleeing from Saul (1 Sam 25:1).
